Welcome to the Airline Opinion Page / Warning, read this at your own risk! Where this travel consultant gives his opinion regarding airlines. Topics will vary widely from government control to customer service, read it at your own risk and respond, if you must, to chrisg@ashburnhamct.com. The Wright Amendment The twin cities of Dallas / Fort Worth and the Federal Government's control of the use of DFW, Dallas - Fort Worth International Airport as compared to DAL, Love Field and how it relates to a controversy between Southwest Airlines and American Airlines. UNFAIR If Congress wants to continue to play in the field of airline regulation, why don't they, instead of regulating flight distances from one airport to another (Wright amendment), set minimum fares on all domestic routes. If airlines, who are either oblivious to the base cost of routes or feel they have no choice but to undercharge in the face of competition, will stop underselling routes that ultimately bring about their own demise, we will all save a buck or two. If they haven't the brains to charge at least cost, then set the minimum for the route so they can at least pay their obligations and not cry to Uncle Sam (The Taxpayer) to take over a pension plan or some other boondoggle that sheer stupidity has caused. Who has fewer brains, a Congress who says you cant fly too far from a particular airport, or an airline who sells $9.00 fares on a 1600 mile flight? Maybe it's both, the airline who asks Congress to pay their pension plan and the Congress who says yes. Or maybe it's the traveling public who won't pay more than $200.00 to fly coast-to-coast, as the airlines will try to have you believe. Ultimately it's the taxpayer who actually pays the bill. Fly or no, you pay it! It's like subsidizing your neighbors vacation when you can't afford one yourself! Wright and Shelby AmendmentsFlight Restrictions at Dallas Love Field
Travel into and out of Dallas Love Field is subject to the limitations of the Wright Amendment. Federal law prohibits Southwest from offering for sale, or providing transportation between, Dallas Love Field and any point beyond Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Mississippi, and Alabama. Help repeal the Wright Amendment and Set Love Free!
